When you’re travelling to cold places, whether it’s skiing in Austria or trekking in Alaska, you’ll want plenty of things with you to keep you warm. Do you need an overnight bag, new skis, a hat, some thermals or other things? If so, then here are some things to pack when going somewhere cold. Remember that it is always good to have a little extra on hand than not to have enough!

If you’re camping in the great outdoors, then you’ll definitely need a top of the line sleeping bag that is warm and comfortable. Do not skimp on the insulation! When night draws in, it gets extremely cold in winter. Make sure that your bag has a lining that is completely sealed to prevent problems with condensation and leaky bags.

Carry some small first aid kits. Most cities have places that sell first aid supplies but it’s always the way that when you need first aid, you’re never near a place to get supplies. Remember that the ideal first aid supplies for travelling somewhere cold include insulating thermal blankets. These are items that you will need in case of a medical emergency, so make sure that you carry plenty of them too. When you are traveling, there is really no way to predict when something might go wrong, so it pays to be prepared.

Bring a jacket: Cold weather makes everything seem colder, so don’t skimp on a jacket! The bottom line is that you need layers; the lighter the coat, the better which might sound counterproductive but multiple layers is preferable to one thick heavy coat. For an even warmer outfit, choose high quality thermal long johns underneath your normal clothes. Carry a camera: While most people visit certain places on their holidays just for the landscape, some do so for the opportunity to take pictures. If you want to get as many shots as possible, bring a compact digital camera with a good lens. In addition to the camera, you will also need batteries, an important accessory that is often overlooked!

Even though you may be bundled up, the wind can be very cold during the winter. If you want to stay warm, you should definitely consider investing in scarves, gloves and a woolly hat, especially if you are going to spend time outdoors. When you visit somewhere cold, there is no other more effective way to stay warm than to wear high quality accessories such as these.

Footwear is also an important consideration and ideally you will want a couple of pairs of good winter boots. These should have a solid grip for icy conditions and be waterproof. It might sound odd but it’s also a good idea to pack some sunscreen. If you’re going somewhere snowy, the sun’s reflections off the snow can still cause sunburn!
